Learning gender equality: how women’s protest influences youth gender attitudes

Current comparative analyses of gender attitudes among adolescents largely focus on individual-level characteristics. Understudied is the role women’s protest adolescents’ attitudes. This paper investigates how protests reported in national news shape young citizens’ across 32 countries. Using IEA International Civic and Citizenship Study survey data (2009), we test whether have a positive impact egalitarian adolescents. Our multi-level models demonstrate that girls are more their than boys. The gap between boys changes depending level equality country. In countries with lower equality, increases slightly as number increases, although difference not significant. where already high, significant at all levels but narrows increases. findings expand scholars’ understanding influences public opinion people important implications for attitude change occurs serves tool developing equality.
